Our Process

Why is this important?

Smoke damage is far more dangerous than what you can see or smell.
After a fire or smoke event, microscopic soot, carcinogens, and toxic particulates can remain embedded throughout your home—on surfaces, inside HVAC systems, in furniture, clothing, and even children’s bedding.

These invisible contaminants are known to:

  • Irritate the lungs and airways

  • Trigger asthma attacks and respiratory distress

  • Worsen allergies and sinus conditions

  • Cause chronic headaches, nausea, and fatigue

  • Pose increased long-term cancer risks with continued exposure

Children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable. Because these particles are microscopic, a home can look “clean” while still being unsafe to live in.

At Smoke Restore, we do not guess and we do not mask odors. We follow a scientific, documented, and insurance-approved process designed to identify, remove, and verify the elimination of harmful smoke-related contaminants—so your home is not just restored, but certified safe for your family to live in again.

Step 1: Initial Particulate Swab Testing

Our process begins with an initial on-site assessment.
We perform surface swab testing in multiple areas of your home to determine whether smoke particulates and contaminants are present.

This step allows us to:

  • Identify hidden smoke residue
  • Determine whether harmful particulates exist beyond visible damage
  • Establish the need for further scientific testing

Step 2: State-Licensed Industrial Hygienist Inspection

If particulates or potential carcinogens are detected, we immediately engage a state-licensed industrial hygienist.

The hygienist will:

  • Professionally swab and sample the home
  • Follow state and industry testing protocols
  • Submit samples to certified, accredited laboratories

These labs test for:

  • Smoke particulates
  • Carcinogens
  • Toxic chemicals and residues that can impact health

Step 3: Laboratory Analysis & Official Results

Once testing is complete, the laboratory issues a formal report.

Based on these results, one of two outcomes will occur:

✅ Clean Certification

If results show the home is within safe limits, the hygienist will issue a clean bill of health, certifying the home as safe for occupancy.

📋 Remediation (Clean) Order

If contaminants are present, the hygienist will issue a detailed clean order outlining exactly what must be done to make the home safe again.

This clean order becomes the scientific foundation for insurance approval.

Step 4: Insurance Claim & Documentation Submission

We then handle the insurance process on your behalf.

Smoke Restore will:

  • File or assist with filing the insurance claim
  • Submit all hygienist reports, lab results, and clean orders
  • Provide scientific and industry documentation required by the carrier

Because the scope is based on licensed third-party testing, insurance companies typically approve the cleaning and restoration process.

Step 5: Pack-Out & Controlled Cleaning Process

Once approved, we begin the restoration phase.

This includes:

  • Full pack-out of contents from the home
  • Specialized cleaning of:
    • Furniture
    • Clothing and textiles
    • Personal belongings
    • Structural surfaces (as required by the hygienist)
  • Use of industry-approved methods designed to remove smoke particulates—not just mask odors

All work strictly follows the hygienist’s clean order.

Step 6: Return of Contents & Final Certification

After cleaning is complete:

  • All items are returned to the home
  • The home is reassembled and restored
  • Final verification is completed

You will receive:

  • A certified letter
  • A clean bill of health confirming the home is safe
  • Documentation verifying that your home, belongings, clothing, and furniture are safe to use again

With Smoke Restore, you are not guessing.
You are protected by licensed professionals, laboratory testing, and insurance-approved documentation.
